How to Make a Hanging Towel

Kitchen towels and dishcloths are a practical and decorative way to update a country style kitchen.  – Making a hanging towel is a relatively easy project—you don’t need to be an experienced seamstress—but you will need to know how to sew on a machine.

Gather these items:

  • A decorative kitchen towel
  • 1/4 yard of coordinating twill or other sturdy fabric to make the hanger
  • Decorative button or snap set
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Fabric scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Straight pins
  • Tape measure

7 Steps to Sew Your Own Hanging Dish Towel

  1. Cut the kitchen towel in half, across the width; set halves aside.
  2. Fold the fabric in half (selvages together) so you can cut two pieces at once, pin the pattern in place and cut it out.
  3. Fold up 1/2″ on the wrong side of the fabric at the straight end on both pieces of fabric and press.
  4. Put the two pieces together, right sides together, and sew a 1/2″ seam all around, leaving open the end where you pressed up 1/2″. Trim the seam to 1/4″ and clip the curves with a scissors being careful not to clip your stitching. Turn hanger right side out (the 1/2″ pressed parts should be on the inside) and use a dull pencil or the tip of a rounded scissors to push the tip out and iron. If you wish, you can top stitch 1/4″ in from the seam line; set hanger aside.
  5. Using a needle and strong thread, sew a long running stitch across the cut end of the towel, about 1/4″ down, then pull the thread and gather the towel so it fits inside the open end of the hanger. Tie the thread off and cut it.
  6. Slip the gathered part of the towel inside the straight end of the hanger about 1/2″. Machine stitch across the straight end, about 1/4″ above the pressed end, making sure you stitch through all layers.
  7. Add a button and buttonhole where indicated on the pattern or sew on a snap set, and you’re done!

Found hanging towels but no pattern to print out. Where is the pattern. Is it a free printout?

Where do I find the pattern? Or do I have to subscribe?
